A sentence I never want to hear from a client is “wow that interview was a waste of time!”

As a recruiter it’s my job to find the best talent possible, however as we are dealing with human nature, recruiting and hiring is not an exact science and sometimes we don’t end up with the talent we had hoped for.

At Insearch Executive Recruitment we try to eliminate the “human’’ factor by following a 4 step process when screening candidates. This process involves input from the employer, expertise from the recruiter and participation by the candidate.

Here are my 4 screening tips to help you find the best of the best:

  1. Have a detailed job description

This involves having an in-depth discussion with the prospective employer and getting a detailed job description. This detail must include key skills and experience as well as cultural requirements and salary expectations.

  1. Have a candidate profile

Who are we looking for? Knowing what our ideal candidate looks like will make it easier to assess potential candidates. It helps to sometimes have a list of must haves and prioritised key skills so we can more easily reduce our potential candidate list.

  1. Screening and Evaluation

Skills testing is a great method for assessing and comparing candidates who look very similar on paper. We do this during the initial phone interview or face-to-face depending on the job. Additional testing is also sometimes arranged when required.

 

  1. Asking the right questions during phone interviews

To save time I normally start my phone interviews focusing on the required skills and experience, salary expectations and personality/behavioural questions. There is no use having someone who has all the right skills and matches the salary expectations but they are unable to communicate effectively.
